  36.   Users of MagiC!3 has to copy the shutdown program SHUTDOWN.PRG and
  37.   its configuration file SHUTDOWN.INF from the directory
  38.   C:\GEMSYS\GEMDESK\ to the home directory of Thing!
  39.  
  40.   Otherwise the shutdown of MagiC!3 will not work and you may loose
  41.   data when using the 'write back cache' WBDAEMON.

  125. -----------------------------------------------------------------------

  127.   Thing is can be used with MagiC (2.00 or later), TOS (1.04 or later)
  128.   or MultiTOS. Alternate file systems with MiNT (MinixFS etc.) or
  129.   MagiC Mac will be supported as well.
  130.  
  131.     Using Thing with TOS 1.02 or TOS 1.00 is not possible - sorry!
  132.     Changes for such old version of TOS would be too complex and
  133.     could not be done in a 'clean' way, as TOS 1.04 and later contains
  134.     some very important system functions, wich are missing in TOS 1.02
  135.     and TOS 1.00!

  137.     Please get a newer version of TOS (2.06 would be the best) or
  138.     use MagiC.
  139.  
  140.   To display the online manual of Thing (hypertext documentation),
  141.   ST-Guide from Holger Weets is required.
  142.  
  143.   If you want to use the console window of Thing, you have to install
  144.   TOS2GEM by Thomas Binder.

  148. -----------------------------------------------------------------------

  152.     Create a new folder for Thing (e.g. C:\THING). Now copy all files
  153.     from the folder THING - except MONOICON.RSC - to this folder.
  154.  
  155.     Your new folder should contain now:
  156.  
  157.       THING.APP
  158.       THINGRUN.PRG
  159.       ICONS.RSC
  160.       ICONS.INF
  161.       THINGICN.PRG

  163.     If you want to save memory or if you are working with a monochrome
  164.     display only, you can use the 'small version' of ICONS.RSC -
  165.     - MONOICON.RSC. Delete ICONS.RSC and copy MONOICONS.RSC to the
  166.     folder of Thing. After copying, you have to rename the file to
  167.     ICONS.RSC - otherwise Thing will not work! MONOICON.RSC contains
  168.     the same icons as ICONS.RSC - but without colours and animation.

  171.   Online manual (hypertext documentation)

  173.     To display the online manual, ST-Guide from Holger Weets has to be
  174.     installed as accessory.
  175.  
  176.     Installing ST-Guide
  177.     -------------------
  178.       Copy ST-GUIDE.ACC and ST-GUIDE.INF from the folder ST-GUIDE to
  179.       your boot partition (e.g. C:\ if your systems boots from
  180.       drive C).
  181.  
  182.       Now create a new folder for the hypertext files (e.g. D:\GUIDES).
  183.  
  184.       Change the entry 'HYPFOLD' in the configuration file
  185.       ST-GUIDE.INF. This entry tells ST-Guide, where to search for
  186.       hypertext files. If you use D:\GUIDES for these files, the entry
  187.       must be:
  188.  
  189.         HYPFOLD=D:\GUIDES\
  190.  
  191.       Now copy ST-GUIDE.HYP and ST-GUIDE.REF to this folder. These
  192.       files contain a hypertext documentation of ST-Guide.

  194.     Installing the online manual of Thing

  196.       Copy THING.HYP, THING.REF, THINGICN.HYP and THINGICN.REF from the
  197.       folder DOC to the GUIDES folder (as described above) of ST-Guide.

  200.   TOS2GEM
  201.   -------
  202.     If you want to use the console window of Thing, you have to
  203.     install TOS2GEM by Thomas Binder. Just copy TOS2GEM.PRG from the
  204.     folder TOS2GEM to your AUTO folder an re-boot your system. Please
  205.     refer TOS2GEM.TXT for details about this tool.

  208.   Alternate AES system font with MagiC
  209.   ------------------------------------
  210.     MagiC 2.00 or later allows you to use an alternate AES system font,
  211.     when a GDOS (AMC-GDOS, NVDI etc.) is installed. This is not
  212.     neccessary to use Thing - it's just an option.
  213.  
  214.     You will find the font 'Thing System' in the folder GEMSYS.
  215.  
  216.     After copying the font files to your GEMSYS folder and registering
  217.     them in ASSIGN.SYS, the font can be registered with the following
  218.     entry in MAGX.INF:
  219.  
  220.       #_TXT 10 4 99
  221.  
  222.     Please note: All changes in MAGX.INF must be before '#_CTR'!
  223.                  The entry '#_TXT' must only be used once!

  234.     Register Thing as an 'autostart application' in the Atari desktop.
  235.     Starting Thing from the AUTO folder is not possible!

  238.   Thing and MagiC
  239.   ---------------
  240.     To use Thing as a shell for MagiC and as 'AV server', you have to
  241.     add the following entries to the file MAGX.INF:
  242.  
  243.       #_SHL ...\THING.APP
  244.       #_ENV AVSERVER=THING
  245.  
  246.     Replace '...' by the real path of Thing (e.g. C:\THING). Thing will
  247.     be started automatically when re-booting the system.
  248.  
  249.     Please note: All changes in MAGX.INF must be before '#_CTR'!
  250.                  The entry '#_SHL' must only
